Portola, California About an hour north of Truckee in a small town called Portola is The Western Pacific Railroad Museum, home to North America's largest and most complete collection dedicated to telling the story of one railroad. It is also one of the few places where you can experience rail history in a truly hands-on way. Visitors sit in the cab of the world's largest and mightiest diesel locomotive or climb aboard passenger cars from the California Zephyr. The Museum opened for the 2014 season on April 26th and weekend train rides operate all summer long captivating little riders. For any parent with children at a magical train loving age, the Western Pacific RR Museum is a must see. I took my 3 little conductors this past weekend and they adored climbing aboard vintage engines, sitting in passenger cars and conducting their very own train ride. To top it off, if your little passengers get hungry or thirsty after your visit, stop by the Portola Frosty for delicious burgers, fries & ice cream! My 3 year old had the yummiest grilled cheese “of his life” there! For museum hours and train ride schedules check out: http://www.wplives.org/ See you on the tracks! Photo Gallery
