Nevada City, California The historic town of Nevada City, CA is one of our favorite destinations for a day trip from the Tahoe area, and it’s less than an hour drive from Truckee. It seems like there is always something going on in Nevada City, and whether or not there is a special event, the trip is always rewarding and worthwhile. The entire downtown district is registered as a national historic landmark, and the preservation of the town’s colorful past accounts for so much of Nevada City’s appealing charm. Historic buildings are now home to boutique shops, galleries and restaurants serving the highest quality fare. Arts and culture are a huge priority and focus in Nevada City, and that’s what attracts visitors throughout the year. We were attracted to Nevada City last weekend for the annual Artisan’s Festival. Held in the historic Miners Foundry Cultural Center, this is one of the longest running festivals in Nevada County. Regional artisans set up booths in the incredible old foundry building to showcase their amazing work. Photographs, paintings, jewelry, pottery, leatherworks and a huge variety of handmade goods and crafts are on display and on sale. The high level of artistry and quality craftsmanship is very apparent at every artist’s booth. The event also serves as a fundraiser for the Foundry, and is the historic landmark’s unique kickoff to the holiday season.
